Saying things like this always makes me wonder… Why not? Secret magic is always more fun, otherwise old grey dudes wouldn’t make it ‘secret’ and a lot of movies, books and games would be downright boring. But that’s not what this review is about. No, this review is about a wonderful PVC figure made by Yamato; Velvet from Odin Sphere!
In case you don’t know what Odin Sphere is, I’ll explain it too you. Or better yet, I’ll let Wikipedia explain.
Odin Sphere is a 2D fantasy action RPG video game. Developed by Vanillaware and localized and published by Atlus for the PlayStation 2 in 2007, it tells the interlocking stories of five different protagonists. Odin Sphere is considered a spiritual successor to an Atlus game titled Princess Crown and takes some concepts from Norse mythology. Square Enix released the game in Europe on March 14, 2008.
Odin Sphere has five stories. The protagonist of each story is connected to the royalty of each of five warring nations in the world of Erion. Each of these protagonists wields a ‘Psypher’, a weapon with a large crystal capable of absorbing ‘Phozons’, energy sparks released when something (such as an enemy) is slain. These five stories overlap and interconnect, and the protagonist of one story may be the antagonist of another.
I loved GrimGrimoire (also from Vanillaware and quite similar graphics/design) and although I haven’t played Odin Sphere yet (I know, shame on me), I just love the art and the figures based on that art. There are two major companies that creates lovely PVC figures; Alter and Yamato. I chose Yamato since I just loved this Velvet. Besides Alter still doesn’t have a Velvet.
Originally, this figure was a garage kit made in resin. It was created by the sculptor BUBBA and released by Dice Caramel Circle (supervised by Yamato?) in 2009. About a year later, Yamato re-releases her as a PVC figure and that’s when I got her in as well.
This truly is one of my favorite PVC figures. She’s a 1/6 scale which is my favorite scale for PVCs. Too bad it isn’t the only scale that manufacturers use…
The details are amazing and the colors are vibrant and well applied. If you look at the images you can see the amount of details. Just look at her eyes, the ring on her finger, the lace on the black veil, the nails, … And I just love her stockings. She’s just so darn sexy.
What I also like about this figure is the fact that she’s a cast off figure which means she has removable clothing. In her case it’s her skirt. Underneath you find minuscule panties with some lace-like details. Even though it looks very good, I don’t think I’ll ever display her like that. I just love the curves and the flow of her skirt too much. I really think it adds more to the figure if she’s displayed with her skirt. Even though, it still is a nice feature that I really appreciate in figures.
I also love the details on Graveryl. Graverly is her Psypher, her weapon. The clear plastic used for this is amazing, as is the setting in which the crystals are fitted. Velvet comes with little plastic rings so you can secure the chain easily. Personally, I don’t like to use them since you can see them if you look closely. Besides, the chain hangs just fine and secure enough for me without using these little peg thingies.
Conclusion
If you like Odin Sphere or just sexy PVC figures, don’t hesitate to buy her! This is one of the most stunning and sexy figures we have. The details and the finish on this figure are absolutely stunning. I don’t think any of our other figures quite match her in this.
